My kinda town

Oh, yes it is… especially in the summertime. The summer weather seems perfect here… Not too muggy like the District… Not that take a shower, dress, go outside and want to shower again five minutes later kind of heat. It’s been pleasant. The views are spectacular, and I love the color of Lake Michigan. Absolutely beautiful.

I’m sure I’d curse the cold in the winter, though.

My camera was in the hotel a couple of days ago, so my phone captured this view:

Confessions of negligence

Repentance
It’s been a fun flurry of activity the last couple of weeks, and I’ve neglected the Inkwell. I must keep stirring so it won’t dry up!

Last week I was in North Carolina working on a story I’ve been yearning to do for Intern Edition.*Turns out my story won’t be in the show… But that’s alright, because I’ll be hosting the show. I really wanted it to be part of IE, but there are already too many shows to possibly include them all in the final cut… some will be Web only pieces. And I was facing a really tight time crunch before leaving for Chicago… And my IE editors asked if I wanted to audition.

Week One: Talk of the Nation

I woke up with a headache Monday morning. Ugh!
But I was determined to have a great day.
Regardless of the headache, things started out o.k.
The staff of TOTN were no strangers, since I decided to join them for their first Newseum broadcast a couple of months ago, shortly after I accepted their internship offer.

It was great seeing them again and re-learning names.

On day one, we had all the introductory meetings where we reviewed the information inside our intern folders and filled out paperwork.

We took photos, got our access and ID cards, and were dropped off to our departments. It was funny, because P.D. took the interns to their areas in groups and dropped us off… kind of reminded me of an afternoon school bus… albeit a walking school bus, where eager kiddies can’t wait to get home… for us, what home will be for the next 10 weeks.

I had a desk, phone extension, e-mail address waiting. I’m impressed.

I admit I am overwhelmed. There is so much to learn, so much to get used to, so much to absorb, but watching the show live… It’s such a wonderful piece of radio art. It’s like an orchestra the way the pieces fit together to make a solid program.

Lesson Learned
Oh, I did learn a lesson this week. Actually, I must say I re-learned the lesson… She the need for comfortable shoes really hit home around 2001, when I first started teaching. I wore some cute mules to work one morning. By the end of that day, I stumbled into a Nordstrom Rack, almost in tears. I was determined to leave with a new pair of shoes on my feet, even if I had to kick a foot up on the checkout counter so the cashier could scan the price tag.

I wasn’t quite crying after escorting guests from the Newseum’s first floor to Knight Studio… but I realized that unless I’m on a runway, the same rule I used while teaching applies to journalism: comfort first, woman!

Surreal Moments
The most surreal time was Tuesday night. First of all, I couldn’t believe I was heading back into the District during a thunderstorm with tornado warnings in Virginia. It always seems like I’ve been navigating the streets during every tornado warning lately! (Back to Tuesday night) TOTN had an election special, and of course it was a zinger because the final two primaries were that night. Watching Obama’s speech… knowing he had more than enough delegates to clinch the nomination… A man of color… That was the most surreal thing. Even more humorous was reading a copy of his prepared speech during his delivery. Sometimes I just followed along. Other times, I just read ahead.

Never thought I’d see it. A man of color as a presidential nominee. Whether or not he wins the general election… History’s been made. Even if Clinton were the nominee… still would’ve been history made.

One-liner
Anything great, whether it be a great radio show or running for president, starts with one element: an idea.
